THE FAIRWAYS IS IN ZONE 22
Let's reduce our numbers! Take that extra moment to ensure your vehicle is secured and your valuables are removed from sight. If you are leaving your home for the day, close and secure your doors and windows. If you use a garage door opener to close your door, wait for it to close all the way before driving off.

THE CAPTAINS MEETING

On the evening of November 6,  your Fairways Watch coordinator, along with 2 residents, attended Captain Meade,s annual pre- holiday security briefing. The invited group included other neighbor hood watch organizations and security officers from the private retail sector. We would like to give a brief summary of the meeting, along with some of the safety pointers that were offered.
In addition to the captain,in attendance was Detective Christine Shaw, and special projects officer Deputy Jason Murrill. The captain led off the program with a summary of how they are planning increased security for the Waterford Lakes shopping area and all of East Orange County..The sector 2 commander will bring in all available resources for the holiday season. Along with uniformed officers and marked vehicles, will be plain clothes and unmarked units The captain cautioned all shoppers ,that thieves will actually follow people home ,who buy big ticket items, such as,flat screens. One very clear concern is people leaving their purchased gifts in their cars.----Remember, the thieves are doing their Christmas shopping too!
Next to speak was Detective Shaw. Christine had a special message for the ladies, Right now the hottest theft item going is--- SMART PHONES. Most purses have a handy pocket on the side of the purse.----BULLS EYE---they will be gone. When out shopping, put the phone inside the purse and close it tight.
The final speaker introduced by the captain was Deputy Murrill The captain explained that Jason is his special projects officer. Jason Murrill ,only answers to Captain Meade and no one else. I have had the pleasure to work with Jason several times. Believe me he has done a lot of good things for the Fairways.Jason will be one of the officers ,watching ,from the background in the big ticket shopping areas. Jason says, he always sees people doing ,stupid things---like putting  purses and gifts in the trunk and leaving the car. He says if he can see stupid behavior, so can the bad guys!
Fairways residents can personally meet all of the above officers, on Thursday January 30, 2014, at our annual security seminar. PLEASE PLAN TO BE THERE----You will be glad you did !

MUGGING IN THE FAIRWAYS !

Criminal Investigation Unit

SPECIAL ALERT

The following event was reported by a resident and confirmed by the sheriff;s office. On Tuesday. evening about 8;45 pm, a resident was on a golf cart, traveling south on Warwick Hills Dr,between the 2 ponds. He was stopped by a ''scruffy'' appearing white male, est age of 20 yrs. the resident was pulled from the cart and threatened to force him to empty his pockets.Almost immediately 2 more young ''scruffey'' white males appeared out of the darkness and joined in the assault.
The resident was carrying no valuables. The assailants were upset that they could get nothing of value, so in frustration, one of the attackers, struck the resident in the chest with a fist !
Fortunately a cars lights appeared and the assailants disappeared in the darkness, speaking threats as they left.
The victim, continued to his residence and called 911. A complete police report was filed  with O.C.S.O..

Last evening I attended a special annual holiday meeting at sector 2 headquarters with Captain Meade. I was greeted at the door by the captain. He was well aware of this incident ,and had all the details of the crime. The captain has already set in place extra patrols for the Fairways. In addition to that he had me meet with his ''special project'' officer, Jason Murrill. And Detective Christine Shaw. I had a detailed discussion with the officers.
There is some thinking that this attack came from homeless people. Jason has been here once, looking for signs of the homeless and is coming back today [ Thur ]

UPDATES ON PREVIOUS POSTS AND SUBJECTS

UPDATES
AUTO BURGLARIES IN PARK---It is estimated that we have had 15 to 20 attempts or burglaries in the last 10 days. Most victims have been reluctant to file police reports due to their perceived negligence in not locking their cars. Fairways watch has been in direct contact with Detective Christine Shaw, on these crimes. At this time, there have been no arrests. Fairways Watch has reason to believe that there are 2 thieves, working together, they may be young ,with one possibly being a female.
Their method of operation is always the same--they quickly go into a carport, try to open the passenger door, rummage through the glove box, console, and grab any loose objects of value.Objects found of no value are strewn over the parking area.
These thieves have had some success. Their ''loot'' consists of an   I pad, prescription pain medications, GPS s, cash, and a valuable designer purse.
PLEASE, PLEASE folks, lock your cars --THEY WILL BE BACK!
We have extra patrols in the community--but its like looking for a ''needle in a haystack''

IT IS TIME FOR A NEW BEGINNING

The sunrise over the second fairway tells of the beginning of a new day.We also need a new beginning in our thinking about the security of our community.
For the last four months, Fairways Watch has been working on different security options, that could be custom tailored to the needs of the Fairways. First and foremost was the cost concern of all systems considered.
First option up was to put ''Barney Fife'', back on duty in the existing guard house. This sounds simple enough, right ?
WRONG---Due to current regulations,a new enclosure would be required, complete with plumbing and air conditioning. The guesstamated cost of the structure, with sewer line is $30-50K. Then we have to pay ''Barney'' His cost for night time only would be around $5500 per month--24 hrs would be a whopping $11500 per month. The annual cost would be a staggering $140,000 per year !
So--as the old engineer said ''BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARDS'' We had heard of other communities going away from the private guards, and changing to live, interactive, REMOTE MONITORING. Some of the communities named came as a surprise. Heathrow, and Windemere, were among the more recognizable names.
Over the past four months, Fairways Watch has met as a small committee including both residents and law enforcement officers. During the four months, we have interviewed eight different security systems vendors, who all came and visited the Fairways.Included in this same time frame, we also did detailed action studies and vehicle counts at our gates.
The results of our work is somewhat surprising. We can have a good dependable system, with 24/7 live agent remote monitoring, complete with  ''no tailgating'' gates.---A bar code reading entrance for residents [no more clickers] --Also included is a data base for regular visitors-- BUT-- most important of all is the live agent greeting by camera, with the recording and identifying system for those coming in through the visitors lane.
This system would reuse the present guard house and the new brick phone enclosure, would become the greeting camera kiosk.
On a special note, Fairways Watch took Priscilla to see a similar system in operation in the nearby Avalon area. Priscilla seemed receptive to this different type of operation.
NOW--- for the biggest surprise of all--- the system described above would only cost about ONE THIRD of the amount ''Barney'' would cost, with his amenities!---Perhaps its time for Barney to retire.
This post is only a very preliminary look at our findings. There is much more information to come. We are sending a complete detailed  nine page report to Hometown America in Chicago for Mr Brauns consideration.
If things continue to move in the expected right direction, we will hold special Fairways Watch meetings for ALL homeowners to answer the many questions that are expected to arise.  Watch for notices of meeting.  Fifty-one percent (51%) of homeowners approval is what's required after we get Chicago's buy-in to the Proposal.

IT DID NOT TAKE A ''CRYSTAL BALL''TO KNOW

UPDATE POSTED BELOW---LAST UPDATE OCT 31
All that is needed to forecast more auto burglaries, in the Fairways, is to read the previous post ! YES--- folks we had more thefts last   nigh [Oct. 26 ]t. This time it was on Pine valley, in the 14400 block..
Several cars and trucks [REPORTEDLY LOCKED ] were broken into, with money and other items of value taken.
THIS IS JUST ONE MORE EXAMPLE OF WHY WE NEED A BETTER ENTRANCE GATE SYSTEM !
We do not have a clue as to who is prowling around our neighborhood at the ''wee'' hours of the morning and night.---There are ways to identify ,people entering the Fairways on a 24/7 basis that is practical and affordable ! Fairways Watch ,has been working on a comprehensive, target hardening project since July.
STAY TUNED, ''THE PUMPKIN MAY BE READY TO POP''

UPDATE OCT 28---NUMEROUS AUTO BUGLARIES REPORTED ON 2000 BLOCKS OF PEBBLE BEACH REPORTS BEING FILED !!!
UPDATE OCT 31---MORE CAR BURGLARIES--THIS TIME ON WARWICK HILLS CIRCLE,INVOLVING THEFT OF MEDICATIONS [ new twist ]--REPORT BEING FILED.

NOTE PICTURE BELOW --We are trying everything possible to stop this current surge of car burglaries
---SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!

ADDENDUM TO THE ABOVE--Recently a noted felon has moved back within one mile of the Fairways. This person is a registered sex offender, convicted cocaine dealer, and has been convicted of various thefts. This person has been a suspect of previous burglaries in the Fairways, including the maintenance building. At one time he possessed a Fairways gate ''clicker''
IT SURE WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO KNOW WHEN, AND IF HE COMES THROUGH OUR GATE !

LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS !

THE FOLLOWING IS A REPRINT OF A LOCAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. SOME OF THESE ACCOUNTS ARE SIMILAR TO EVENTS THAT HAVE HAPPENED RECENTLY IN THE FAIRWAYS.---HEED THE ADVICE ! THERE HAS BEEN AN   I-PAD STOLEN FROM A VEHICLE ON INVERARY
Lock your car doors.
If you don't, Seminole County deputies warn, thieves could steal your garage door opener and break into your house.
That's what happened over the weekend when two homes were burglarized after the openers were stolen. In all, about 20 unlocked vehicles in Sweetwater and Wekiva Springs were broken into.
Residents in the northwest Seminole County communities woke up Sunday to find that money, electronics and jewelry had been stolen from their cars, trucks and SUVs, a sheriff's report shows.
Burglars went even farther in two of the cases.

A man who lives on Watercrest Drive near Longwoodsaid he heard his dog growling about 4 a.m. and saw flashlights in his kitchen. He yelled and scared off two strangers who ran away through the garage.
The burglars had removed his garage-door opener from his sport utility vehicle and used it to get inside.
They tried the same thing on Deerwood Loop, but the family's dogs frightened off the burglars sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m., a report states. A garage remote was removed from a pickup parked in the driveway.
In a couple of cases, someone stole garage-door openers but did not use them to enter homes.
Among the valuables taken during the burglary spree were an iPod with a Bluetooth headset, a gold chain with rings and charms worth about $450 and a $400 Sonydigital camera. An iPad was stolen from a pickup parked at a home on Churchill Drive, but a GPS device and a laptop were left behind, according to a report.
The thieves rummaged through center consoles, glove boxes and overhead compartments, in addition stealing loose change.
Investigators hope home-surveillance video will lead them to the crooks. It shows a man wearing a miner's light on his head as he jiggles the door handle of a car. He has a camera around his neck the investigators think may have been stolen from a car in the neighborhood.
To protect yourself, deputies said, you should:
•Keep vehicles locked and avoid leaving valuables inside.
•Keep garage doors down and lock doors to their homes.
•Maintain and regularly test home-security systems.
•Call 911 immediately to report suspicious people or vehicles.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE FOLKS!

This photo was taken Monday, October 2, at the corner of Troon and Pebble Beach. Fortunately it was only a sign,--but it could have been you! The black object laying in the background is a ''fender well'' torn out of the perpetrators automobile. The evidence seems to suggest that the car was exceeding our posted 20 MPH speed limit.
The Fairways is one of very few communities that can still offer a safe haven for walkers, bike riders and golf carts. We all need to protect this rare luxury.
One of the security concerns that is growing,is the reckless, careless driving, in to and around our neighbor hood.
The situation at our entrance gate, continues to be come more and more bizarre. During the mid day hours, the scramble to legally and illegally enter the Fairways ,resembles an old ''ROMAN CHARIOT RACE!''

''BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES''

The title of this post is derived from an old nautical quotation. It was a warning to the ships crew to''protect yourself from harm in every way possible''
In view of some recent thefts and burglaries in our community, that is good advice to all residents. The Fairways is experiencing a sharp increase in auto burglaries and home burglaries. MOST OF THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, SEEMS TO BE IN THE WESTERN AREA OF OUR COMMUNITY. INVERARY DR.,SEEMS TO BE THE AREA OF CHOICE FOR THE THIEVES. ON FRIDAY NIGHT ,SEPT 27, THERE WERE 2 AUTO BURGLARIES IN THE 1800 AND 1900 BLOCK OF INVERARY DR.. BOTH VEHICLES, WERE LOCKED, AS REPORTED BY THE OWNERS. ONE RESIDENT LOST A VALUABLE I PAD.
All known thefts have been reported to the Orange County Sheriffs Office.Investigations were made and some finger prints were taken.
Lock your cars and trucks---lock your homes, even when leaving for a short period.

ANOTHER TRICK AT OUR ''BELEGURED'' GATE SYSTEM

Once again, we would like to publish a residents comment as a featured post.Fairways Watch has spent a good bit of time lately, observing the daily'' hassle'', at our entrance gate. We have been attempting to obtain a traffic flow count, at different hours of the day.----EXAMPLE---on September 18 , between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM---112 cars entered our community. Of these 112 cars, 17 appeared to be ''gate runners'' Who and why? At certain times of the day, life in our entrance lane, can be downright dangerous!
As part of our ''target hardening program'', we continue to work on several, better gate options.
Our recently repaired entrance gates ,have already been struck and damaged twice.---It is a pretty good bet ,that  ''gate runners''. were the culprits.

         Anonymous said...

Here's the latest trick the gate runners are doing

I pulled in to driveway and there was a car at the front gate, right in the middle of both lanes, blocking me from passing on one side or the other. He simply waited there until I pressed the button to be let in. It was late at night and I didn't want any confrontation with this person. I let them in so I could get home to bed, but realized after ward that I should have at least remembered to write down the plate number and call Bill with that information.

Next time I will, but I wanted you to be aware of this "new" situation they're putting us in

SOME GOOD ADVICE ----FROM A RESIDENT!

This note was originally sent as a comment to one of our posts. The administrator feels that it is worthy of its own post.We encourage all residents to submit comments such as this, they are appreciated.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "THE ANSWER IS YES-----WE COULD BE NEXT !":

Do you know your neighbor? If you answered NO, then why not? The only way to get them out is to see who is living next to you. Go over and introduce yourself and ask them are you registered with the office and what is your name. Give the name to Bill as HTA could care less. We all need to work at this to protect our communit

THE ANSWER IS YES-----WE COULD BE NEXT !

On September 1, we posted a reprint of a channel 9 report, titled ''ARE WE NEXT?''  The story was about a local 55+ community, by the name of Gulfstream .  The story details the rise of residential burglaries in the south Orange County mobile home park.
During the 3 weeks plus of our inoperative gates, the Fairways also experienced a significant rise in thefts and burglaries During this time ,several bicycles and other items were stolen.
THE ONE SIGNIFICANT THEFT IS DETAILED AS FOLLOWS: On August 26, a senior resident left his properly locked home to go to the exercise room, for approximately one hour,in late afternoon. This residence is centrally located,in the Inverary and Pine Valley area. When the resident returned, he found that his home had been broken into.Among the items taken, during the burglary was his wallet and a collection of heirloom antique jewelry. Many precious memories were lost. The resident immediately notified the Orange County Sheriffs office, and filed a complete report.Later, After the uniformed deputy left ,the resident was visited by a lost property detective. The detective, continued, with a proper and thorough investigation. The resident ,had nothing but positive comments about OCSO.
Fairways Watch, inquired as to whether the resident victim, reported the crime to the front office. His reply was as follows,---''I went to the office, and spoke to the lady,at the front desk,--I told her what had happened''---Fairways Watch asked if the office attendant made notes, took his name, or commented in any way? The victim simply said ''NO they did not!''
Fairways Watch is at a loss, to understand the reported lack of interest and response to the elder residents loss and misfortune, by the office staff member.
SO folks, how is our gate security, working out for you?
Fairways Watch is continuing to gather ''target hardening'' information for our community.Fairways Watch has been doing a traffic study and count at the front gate. At times the inbound traffic is overwhelming. We believe that a lot of the heavy inbound traffic is due to the ''open'' golf course and tavern. The new electronic sign is also believed to be a contributing factor.
FOLKS WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR BASIC SECURITY!

SPECIAL COMPUTER SCAM ALERT AND ADVISORY

FAIRWAYS WATCH is posting the following information to warn all residents of a reported problem on the internet. On September 3, we received a call from a very concerned resident. She described the following : She was having trouble getting on line to check her local bank account. While on line, she also called the bank to relay her problem. The bank representative, attempted to ''walk'' her through the procedure, once more. The bank directed her to click on to a specific link,[ON THE BANK WEBSITE] When the resident did this-- immediately the computer ''LOCKED UP''. Then immediately a long narrative popped up saying that the FBI and INTERPOL was investigating her for all kinds of federal fraud and crimes, and they said that they had her computer locked up. --She turned her computer off and back on--all to no avail--She called the bank---they told her that the account was ok --no problems. The the resident then read the demands on the pop up narrative.---The instructions were---GO TO A STORE AND PURCHASE A ''MONEY PACK CARD FOR $300''--Then she was to contact them and give them the account numbers off of the money pack card--at that point they ,the FBI would unlock her computer and do away with all the criminal charges!----SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!
The FBI never sends Emails--This was probably some thief in Nigeria with a lap top and a throw away cell phone !
NO DOUBT this residents computer had been breached and a bad virus, had infected it. FAIRWAYS WATCH advised the resident that the ''money pack'' angle was proof of a blatant SCAM.We also advised the resident to report this to the OCSO cyber crime unit and double check with their bank. We also suggested that the resident use a computer repair service, which has been a faithful advertiser in the Eagle for years.[I spoke from personal experience.]
For anyone wanting to learn more about ''CYBER THIEVES'' I recommend ---''RIPOFFREPORT.COM''---enter into their search box ''cash services''. This will show you over 300 examples of computer fraud!
REMEMBER, DONT SEND MONEY OR INFORMATION TO SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW!!
