An 85-year-old man was killed in Sumter County Tuesday morning in a golf cart crash, Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said Francis Hughes died at Villages Regional Hospital after being involved in a crash with a minivan while on his golf cart.
According to the report, Hughes was driving southbound on Morse Boulevard in the golf cart path when he attempted to make a left turn on Fuentez Avenue.
The minivan struck the passenger side of the golf cart and pushed it north in the southbound lanes of Morse Boulevard.
FHP said Hughes was ejected from the golf cart, which ended up in the golf cart path. The mini van crashed into a ditch and ended up in the grass.
Folks, I hate to say this, but some of the''driving exhibition,s'' in the Fairways, are more exciting than Chitwood's old thrill show!
In my past 15 years of Fairways residency. I have seen the following''events''---
A Lincoln town car, climbing a tree on the 14300 block of pebble Beach,---
On 2 different occasions, cars have crashed, into our mail center--
A car ran into a house, destroying it on Augusta Rd.------
BUT--- The wildest show of all was 3-4 years ago---On a Saturday, at the conclusion of a''55 alive'' class--a resident ,backing out of a Masters parking space--lost control of the car--careened across the Masters lot--through a yard at the corner of Augusta--back through the grass area of the Master --wide open across the Masters lot--tearing out the corner of the Masters pool fence--roaring across Pebble beach, --ending up in the yard of the corner house on Firestone!---
It is quite evident that a guardian angel was close by, all events---no injuries whatsoever.
Almost daily we see speeders, stop sign runners, and other careless acts. IT IS NOT ALWAYS THE RESIDENTS!--We see contractors, delivery trucks, visiting nurses, and even our garbage truck, violating the stop signs and speed limits!----Some of the worst violators are the young golfers, coming in to play in the afternoon.
The biggest problem is --THERE IS NO PROGRAM IN PLACE TO ENFORCE, EVEN THE MOST BASIC ,COMMON SENSE TRAFFIC RULES.
THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF CAN NOT ISSUE TICKETS IN HERE--DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE HAVE PRIVATE ROADS.
BUT---
If HTA--- would bring all of our traffic signs up to state specs and make arrangements with Orange County We could obtain some enforcement.
WE CERTAINLY, DO NOT WANT A STORY, LIKE THE ONE ABOVE!

The document found at he URL below, is an example of what an agreement between HTA and the county could look like.
All HTA has to do is ask… cut the paper work and (gasp) spend money on legal signage, though I am not sure if the signage restriction can't be waived. There might also be a chance that the homeowners association could get the ball rolling, too.
Though I would offer this caveat - I was a journalist for years and used to get 10 calls a year about speeding in neighborhoods. Once the police intervened you can guess what happened. The calls started coming about the police ticketing the wrong people… not outsiders for doing 45 mph in a 20 mph zone, but residents, who made up the majority of the cars on the neighborhood roads, and who didn't think 32 in a 20 was speeding.
On the upside, a steady police presence significantly curtailed drunken driving in those neighborhoods, which, on the surface, has the potential to be a very unpopular initiative within the Fairways.
