''BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES''

The title of this post is derived from an old nautical quotation. It was a warning to the ships crew to''protect yourself from harm in every way possible''
In view of some recent thefts and burglaries in our community, that is good advice to all residents. The Fairways is experiencing a sharp increase in auto burglaries and home burglaries. MOST OF THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, SEEMS TO BE IN THE WESTERN AREA OF OUR COMMUNITY. INVERARY DR.,SEEMS TO BE THE AREA OF CHOICE FOR THE THIEVES. ON FRIDAY NIGHT ,SEPT 27, THERE WERE 2 AUTO BURGLARIES IN THE 1800 AND 1900 BLOCK OF INVERARY DR.. BOTH VEHICLES, WERE LOCKED, AS REPORTED BY THE OWNERS. ONE RESIDENT LOST A VALUABLE I PAD.
All known thefts have been reported to the Orange County Sheriffs Office.Investigations were made and some finger prints were taken.
Lock your cars and trucks---lock your homes, even when leaving for a short period.

ANOTHER TRICK AT OUR ''BELEGURED'' GATE SYSTEM

Once again, we would like to publish a residents comment as a featured post.Fairways Watch has spent a good bit of time lately, observing the daily'' hassle'', at our entrance gate. We have been attempting to obtain a traffic flow count, at different hours of the day.----EXAMPLE---on September 18 , between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM---112 cars entered our community. Of these 112 cars, 17 appeared to be ''gate runners'' Who and why? At certain times of the day, life in our entrance lane, can be downright dangerous!
As part of our ''target hardening program'', we continue to work on several, better gate options.
Our recently repaired entrance gates ,have already been struck and damaged twice.---It is a pretty good bet ,that  ''gate runners''. were the culprits.

         Anonymous said...

Here's the latest trick the gate runners are doing

I pulled in to driveway and there was a car at the front gate, right in the middle of both lanes, blocking me from passing on one side or the other. He simply waited there until I pressed the button to be let in. It was late at night and I didn't want any confrontation with this person. I let them in so I could get home to bed, but realized after ward that I should have at least remembered to write down the plate number and call Bill with that information.

Next time I will, but I wanted you to be aware of this "new" situation they're putting us in

SOME GOOD ADVICE ----FROM A RESIDENT!

This note was originally sent as a comment to one of our posts. The administrator feels that it is worthy of its own post.We encourage all residents to submit comments such as this, they are appreciated.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "THE ANSWER IS YES-----WE COULD BE NEXT !":

Do you know your neighbor? If you answered NO, then why not? The only way to get them out is to see who is living next to you. Go over and introduce yourself and ask them are you registered with the office and what is your name. Give the name to Bill as HTA could care less. We all need to work at this to protect our communit

THE ANSWER IS YES-----WE COULD BE NEXT !

On September 1, we posted a reprint of a channel 9 report, titled ''ARE WE NEXT?''  The story was about a local 55+ community, by the name of Gulfstream .  The story details the rise of residential burglaries in the south Orange County mobile home park.
During the 3 weeks plus of our inoperative gates, the Fairways also experienced a significant rise in thefts and burglaries During this time ,several bicycles and other items were stolen.
THE ONE SIGNIFICANT THEFT IS DETAILED AS FOLLOWS: On August 26, a senior resident left his properly locked home to go to the exercise room, for approximately one hour,in late afternoon. This residence is centrally located,in the Inverary and Pine Valley area. When the resident returned, he found that his home had been broken into.Among the items taken, during the burglary was his wallet and a collection of heirloom antique jewelry. Many precious memories were lost. The resident immediately notified the Orange County Sheriffs office, and filed a complete report.Later, After the uniformed deputy left ,the resident was visited by a lost property detective. The detective, continued, with a proper and thorough investigation. The resident ,had nothing but positive comments about OCSO.
Fairways Watch, inquired as to whether the resident victim, reported the crime to the front office. His reply was as follows,---''I went to the office, and spoke to the lady,at the front desk,--I told her what had happened''---Fairways Watch asked if the office attendant made notes, took his name, or commented in any way? The victim simply said ''NO they did not!''
Fairways Watch is at a loss, to understand the reported lack of interest and response to the elder residents loss and misfortune, by the office staff member.
SO folks, how is our gate security, working out for you?
Fairways Watch is continuing to gather ''target hardening'' information for our community.Fairways Watch has been doing a traffic study and count at the front gate. At times the inbound traffic is overwhelming. We believe that a lot of the heavy inbound traffic is due to the ''open'' golf course and tavern. The new electronic sign is also believed to be a contributing factor.
FOLKS WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR BASIC SECURITY!

SPECIAL COMPUTER SCAM ALERT AND ADVISORY

FAIRWAYS WATCH is posting the following information to warn all residents of a reported problem on the internet. On September 3, we received a call from a very concerned resident. She described the following : She was having trouble getting on line to check her local bank account. While on line, she also called the bank to relay her problem. The bank representative, attempted to ''walk'' her through the procedure, once more. The bank directed her to click on to a specific link,[ON THE BANK WEBSITE] When the resident did this-- immediately the computer ''LOCKED UP''. Then immediately a long narrative popped up saying that the FBI and INTERPOL was investigating her for all kinds of federal fraud and crimes, and they said that they had her computer locked up. --She turned her computer off and back on--all to no avail--She called the bank---they told her that the account was ok --no problems. The the resident then read the demands on the pop up narrative.---The instructions were---GO TO A STORE AND PURCHASE A ''MONEY PACK CARD FOR $300''--Then she was to contact them and give them the account numbers off of the money pack card--at that point they ,the FBI would unlock her computer and do away with all the criminal charges!----SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!
The FBI never sends Emails--This was probably some thief in Nigeria with a lap top and a throw away cell phone !
NO DOUBT this residents computer had been breached and a bad virus, had infected it. FAIRWAYS WATCH advised the resident that the ''money pack'' angle was proof of a blatant SCAM.We also advised the resident to report this to the OCSO cyber crime unit and double check with their bank. We also suggested that the resident use a computer repair service, which has been a faithful advertiser in the Eagle for years.[I spoke from personal experience.]
For anyone wanting to learn more about ''CYBER THIEVES'' I recommend ---''RIPOFFREPORT.COM''---enter into their search box ''cash services''. This will show you over 300 examples of computer fraud!
REMEMBER, DONT SEND MONEY OR INFORMATION TO SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW!!

Gated 55+ retirement community targeted by burglars

  •
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
A gated retirement community inOrange County has become the target of thieves.

Over the past few weeks, senior citizens have had their homes burglarized.

The spike in crime is happening at the Gulfstream Harbor Solstice community off Goldenrod and Hoffner roads in east Orange County.

All of the victims are elderly and ailing, and some live in the community seasonally.

Deputies say thieves are taking full advantage of that.

They said despite it being a gated community, criminals are still making their way in.

Delia Bond's home is the latest to be burglarized in the past three weeks.

"They're not stupid, they took the good jewelry," Bond said.

Bond said she and her husband came home at midnight and interrupted the thieves, but not before making off with nearly $4,000 in jewelry.

"I've been invaded; my home. I didn't sleep all night thinking they were going to come back," Bond said.

She's not alone.

Residents at the 55-plus neighborhood are on alert.

Many have installed home security systems since the crime spree started in early August.

About 150 residents attended a town hall meeting last week looking for answers and to offer suggestions to deter crime.

One of which was to fix darkened street lights.

The management said they'll take that under consideration.

One resident who didn't want to be identified wishes Solstice was spending more on security rather than a new clubhouse.

The front gates off Goldenrod Road are guarded by residents. Their job is to let people in and record people who don't have a sticker on their car.

The consensus among the seniors is the brazen burglars know the area well.

One key piece of evidence is a handprint left in the getaway Saturday night.
